Speaker Profile: Marios Maratheftis, Regional Head of Research, Middle East, North Africa & Pakistan, Standard Chartered Bank

Marios Maratheftis is an expert on the regional economy, FX strategy and financial markets. He has several years experience in emerging markets, having graduated from the University of Warwick with an MSc in Economics and Finance and a BSc in Economics. He initially worked as an econometrician in his native Cyprus where he advised the Central Bank on foreign exchange related issues. Marios then took on the role of economist and Senior FX strategist with Standard Chartered Bank based in London, where he played an active role in the management of the Bank’s FX Strategy real money portfolio. He has attracted a large following with the accuracy of his forecasts and his ability to give engaging presentations on a wide variety of financial issues.

He has authored a number of financial and academic articles, and appears regularly in the international media. His job has taken him across the Bank’s franchises in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Marios was promoted to the role of Regional Head of Research for the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia in 2007 and he is based in Dubai.

John Aspden has been working as a consultant with Poten & Partners since 2008. Since joining he has worked closely with clients looking to develop LPG market share against a backdrop of growing trade volumes in seaborne markets. John is also closely involved with Poten’s multi-client publications; LPG in World Markets, a monthly review and outlook of seaborne LPG market dynamics, and LPG in World Trade, a comprehensive forecast of current and future fundamental balances in global LPG markets. Prior to joining Poten, John worked as a journalist at Argus Media, reporting on LPG markets and prices. Bachelor of Communication Studies, Auckland University of Technology.

Nazar Massouh is the Head of Emerging Markets Commodities Sales based in London and is responsible for the commodities business in the Middle East, Russia/CIS and Africa.

Nazar joined Goldman Sachs in 2004 on the US Power desk in New York focusing on structured finance commodity transactions and covering the Texas Power region.

Prior to joining the firm, Nazar served as Director, Energy Group, for CSG Investments, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Beal Bank, in Dallas Texas. Nazar also spent nearly seven years with NRG Energy, Inc. most recently as Assistant Treasurer and Head of Project Finance.

James Webster has over 30 years of experience across the Hydrocarbon Value Chain. With ConocoPhillips he has served in various rolls including management positions in Chemicals & Plastics, Natural Gas, Crude Oil and Liquid Products. These include having been President of Phillips Pipeline Company, President of ConocoPhillips International Inc. while heading up ConocoPhillips Asia Supply and Trading business , and now as General Manager of ConocoPhillips Natural Gas Liquids business based in Houston Texas. In this roll he has global responsibility for ConocoPhillips LPG activity.

Jim is a native of the state of Oklahoma and has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Saint Edwards University, Austin Texas and an MBA from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Philippe Sauquet was born in France in 1957 and graduated from ECOLE POLYTECHNIQUE (France) and ECOLE NATIONALE DES PONTS ET CHAUSSEES (France). He also holds a MASTER OF SCIENCE degree from BERKELEY UNIVERSITY (USA).

He started his career in 1981 as civil engineer at the French Ministry of Equipment, and later at the French Ministry of Economy and Finances, before joining ORKEM, a Chemical Group, in 1988 as VP Strategy and later as Sales and Marketing Director for Acrylics.

He joined TOTAL in 1990 as CEO of protective coatings and later as VP Strategy for Chemicals. In 1997, he was appointed VP Americas for Gas and Power and later VP Strategy for Gas and Power, and CEO of Coal business.

He was appointed in 2002 as Senior Vice-President Renewable Energies, Strategy, Human Resources & Communications of Total Gas & Power.

He is today Senior Vice President Trading & Marketing for Gas & Power Division.

Andrew Laven holds Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Physics from Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. He has held a number of roles in BP including the Commercial Manager for Prudhoe Bay and as a Trading Manager based in London, responsible for many of the activities related to trading of equity and non-equity crude as well as crude supply to BP’s European refineries. He has worked with BP for 20 years and has been the General Manager of Integrated Supply & Trading, Eastern Hemisphere region, based in Dubai, since 2006. He is responsible for key internal and external relationships, business origination and trading activities for the region.
